Focus stealing

I hate to kick what could be called a dead horse, but, will IDEA 5 finally solve the "IDEA steals focus" bug?

I am donning my asbestos suit and preparing for the onslaught of flames now....

If I could lend ALL my votes to this one issue, I'd gladly do it...

Losing the focus is bad, but losing an open panel half a second after it
got open is much worse.

It appeared some time ago, and I can't understand why nobody is
complaining, nor responding:

You are absolutely right, I see it too on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. As a workaround I'm docking all my panels and I guess I got so used to it, I never got around to reporting. I've added some votes.

Ive logged some of those duplicates, and they all had a fair number of votes, but it doesnt seem to be on the todo list.

Its massively annoying, almost dangerous in some cases when IDEA grabs the focus while typing in a different document - especially with such powerful source control integration - its easy to delete files from the repository and not be aware of it.

The most productivity crushing aspect of this (on Linux at least) is the "lost focus", where IDEA will popup a dialog/window/whatever, and it will not have focus, or I will compile/deploy but then have to click outside of IDEA and then back on IDEA again to get the edit cursor to reappear.

Unit tests execution more often than not does not finish until I click outside of IDEA and then back on the unit test console, and then the red square becomes gray and the green start arrow becomes active.

You can have all my votes - there's nothing else I would want fixing or a new feature adding more than this.

I believe the last time we heard from JetBrains about this was in the message at http://intellij.net/forums/thread.jsp?forum=22&thread=97546&message=3340475#3340475 which shows exactly why JetBrains can NOT fix this, it's up to Sun. If JetBrains knows of a relevant Java Bug Database bug ID we could all vote for it.

From memory there was also discussion on how JetBrains could get
-around- it by changing the way IDEA works. Putting alot of these
dialogs into a non-modal dockable panel or something...

Eclipse, IDEA's main competition, doesn't suffer from this bug, and it obviously annoys IDEA's users, so, 'nuff said as far as I'm concerned.

We're aware about the implementation issue, but many solutions were proposed to this issue: don't dispose dialogs until the window is re-activated, a eclipse-style task manager and transparent layers instead of model dialogs are among the proposed solutions.

It's also of note the fact that the JetBrains folks, like Rob Harwood and Eugene Belyaev had a go in this problem, so I think this is defininetly fixable (just not easily). I really hope to see a workaround this bug before Irida goes final.

Eclipse, also doesn't use SWING, where the bug lies ( afaik )

I know this, but users don't care about those details- they just want something that doesn't steal focus.

But why do Eclipse, Netbeans, JBuilder, our own in house Java Swing apps, SAP console (its Java), various other Java based GUIs no suffer from this issue - whatever IDEA does with the dialogs is clearly not the norm.
