There's a freeware version for Windows and Linux, but the full product supports Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and z/OS. You can also get an evaluation version for all the supported platforms.
It comes with a plugin that integrates JProbe into IDEA.
As for whether it's the best, that's for you to decide but we think it's pretty nifty ;)

I've used JProbe and OptimizeIt, and I much preferred JProfiler. Easier interface, though I don't know the products well enough to know if they have equivalent features.
