Idea 9 halts/freezes for 1-3 seconds for no reason

We are having this annoying problem as well. Few seconds freezing when editing *anything*. In my case, it happens the most when I am editing properties files, of about 3900 lines. Never ever had a single issue with that in IDEA 7, only showed up after upgrading to 9.

Config is as follows:
Two identical machines, Intel quad core, 8GB ram, etc.
1 machine runs Linux 2.6.30.10-105.fc11.x86_64
1 machine runs WinVista x64
Both machines run IDEA with JDK1.6.0_17 x64

All systems patched to the max. Both suffer the same problem.

Memory is not the issue here, since we got plenty assigned. This is my (Linux) idea.vmoptions:
-Xms256m
-Xmx3G
-XX:MaxPermSize=512m
-ea
-server

I've been paying attention to the memoryindicator in IDEA, and here's what happens: it freezes, adds 400m to the used memory, then continues. After a few seconds it freezes again, and adds another 400m. After another freeze, it drops back to 300m. And this will cycle for the rest of the day like this.

Please, please get this sorted asap. (Do I sound desperate?? Yes, that's because I am!) If you need me to get you some output of some kind, please say so, and you got it....

Thanks,

WarnerJan

Exactly the same thing I'm seeing.  Since few other people seem to be experiencing this (or else there would be a flood of posts on here), maybe this is due to a plugin?  I don't necessarily have the time to disable all of my plugins and test which one is causing the problem.  I hope JetBrains can figure this out ASAP.  Could also be due to an IDEA feature that only a few people have enabled...

For a long time now, I've set my Xmx, Xms, and MaxPermSize to the same value (728m in my case). I forget why I originally started doing it this way, but I kinda remember it being something similar.

I'm not trying to say it's a permanent solution, but might be worth a shot in the meantime.

I've been using that memory size trick for a long time now.  That's not the solution.

I seem to recall this problem happening in the past.  I can't remember if disabling a feature/plugin fixed it, or if an IDEA upgrade patch fixed it.  Either way I think this is an older issue resurfacing.

The same problem here.

One thing I realized is, that when the freezes happen, a small "star" or "windmill"-Icon appears at the top-right corner of an open "Project" or "Grails"-pane at the side of the editor. Once I close these panes, no or less freezes happen. I believe, these icons indicate an ongoing update of the pane - so the problem is maybe there ?

At least it's some sort of workaround for me to simply minimize these panes.

please capture CPU snapshots as described here http://www.jetbrains.net/devnet/docs/DOC-192

Here you are, three thread-dumps. The first two with open "Grails"-pane while typing nonsense in an existing

grails-controller, the third with open "Project"-pane.

Hello WarnerJan,

Please file a YouTrack issue at http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/ and attach
a CPU snapshot as described in http://jetbrains.net/devnet/docs/DOC-192

Hello, I have been having a very similiar problem while editing just about any type of file in IntelliJ 9. While doing basic editing of any file I experience pauses of 1-3 seconds where intelliJ is unusable. This happens frequently, and I have noticed that it can often be reproduced by several different triggers such as: attempting to cut and paste lines, using the backspace key to delete lines, pressing return several times to create new lines and move down blocks of code.

I love IntelliJ and have used it for several years, but I find that 9 is simpy unusable for my daily development.

Here is some additional information:

I have been doing a lot of groovy on grails programming lately, and have been editing numerous .groovy, .java, .config, .gsp, .html, .properties files, all of which experience these symptoms.
I have tried versions 9.0.0, 9.0.1, and an EAP build of 9.0.2. Same problem in all.
I have played around with the various memory settings to no avail.
I have also tried closing the project structure view, and also the grails view, and every combination of them open/closed. While this seems to have lessened the problem on occassion, it still occurs.
I am running Windows 7 x64.

I have been watching this ticket, its related ticket, and the threads it mentions:

http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/issue/IDEA-27116

I have yet to discover a solution to my problem.

Has there been any update on this problem? Did any of the users posting in this thread find a solution or a workaround? Should I reinstall 8?

Hello shawn,

Please capture a CPU snapshot as described in http://jetbrains.net/devnet/docs/DOC-192
and file a YouTrack issue with the snapshot attached. Without the snapshot,
it's impossible to know whether the problem you're experiencing is the same
as the ones reported by some other users, or completely unrelated.

I submitted two CPU snapshots related to this issue about 6 weeks ago.  I haven't seen any updates on YouTrack regarding this.  It would be nice to get some feedback on this because we cannot upgrade to IDEA 9 until this problem is fixed.

Eric, the symptoms you describe in that ticket http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/issue/IDEA-27174 are the exact symptoms that are occurring on my end as well. As I am finally back to work after snowmageddon on the east coast, I will be able to take the CPU snapshots a bit later today. Hopefully they can then find a resolution to this problem.
