IDEA 4.0 released

What people? Who complained but didn't report issues in the EAP?

This statement was a more general one, not to any particular user here.

That aside, I'm frontrunner in upgrading our 3.x licenses to 4.x so you better believe that I'm concerned with it's stability. I wouldn't want the transition to be a bad experience for any of my colleagues.

I'm in the same situation and I could not convince my coworker to
switcht from 3.0.5 until the last builds. He just tested it from time to
time and found it very slow compared to 3.0.5 and hence went back. I did
not tried 3.0.5 since the last half year (or so) and do not have the
3.0.5 feeling any more.

Consider also that IT business isn't so new any more. There are many experiences to draw from, one of them being that 6-7000 open issues might very well indicate something about a product's stability.

I completely understand you and I also don't like it, that some old,
small, but peeving bugs don't get fixed. But do you know, how much open
bugs exist for other comparable products?

Both Borland and Omnicore has similar issue tracking systems.

Omnicore's product has fewer issues but they appear to release new builds less frequently, which makes it hard to compare with JetBrains. More frequent and enriched builds obviously makes for larger numbers of new issues, which is completely OK. I like JetBrains for their open attitude to us users/customers.

The opposite attitude caused me to abandon Borland who rarely answers reported issues. While their latest release may be slightly more robust and consistently implemented, it's also completely boring and always far behind JetBrains. The openness here in the EAP must generate tons of good ideas giving them an edge over the isolated team behind JBX.

I fully understand and support the need for a commercial release, I was just sad because I feared that the stream of new builds had been interrupted. This doesn't seem to be a problem, but maybe JetBrains should post in the Announcements forum when the 4.0 is (otherwise secretly) updated to a newer build?

By the way, Borland also has fewer issues but since their follow-up is non-existent only a few people still bother to report anything.

Tell it to JetBrains folks :) According to "Corporate Overview" (http://www.intellij.com/idea/docs/CorpOverview.pdf)
their core team (Sergey Dmitriev, Eugene Belyaev, Valentin Kipiatkov) all came from TogetherSoft which was bought by Borland.

The last few releases had very few bugs to their credit. It is going to be
natural for several bugs to be found when it is released to a much larger
audience. I myself thought it was ready. Almost all of the problems I had
were plugin related or were enhancements. This baby was ready to be
birthed.

Now it's time to move on to the next version:
1) full JDK 1.5 support
2) JSP 2.0 support
3) Ability to jar non-web projects

Congratulations!

I am sure we'll see good JetBrains responsiveness if new bugs are
discovered...

In any case, I must say that the traffic on this EAP was overwhelming
compared to the release 3 EAP, which probably means JetBrains are doing
something right.

One small note: It seems that the jetbrains.intellij.announcements didn't
have a new post regarding IntelliJ 4.0...

Looks like there are some actual bug fixes in this one, not just doc

I got 1162 - very odd.

Is this normal for people to all have different builds?

Apparently, JetBrains quietly replace the downloadable installer every other or third day, approximately the same intervals with which EAP builds were released near the initial 4.0 release.

If you got 1162 you propably downloaded 4-5 days ago, I got 1167 yesterday, before that it was 1165. For a few hours it was 1168 but that one disappeared rather quickly, propably due to a serious bug.

There's a build number on the download page (http://www.intellij.com/idea/download/index.html) now. Currently, it shows "build number 1167" and I'm upgrading again ! :)

Thanks Lars! Logically I'm assuming that if there is a later build then bugs or something were fixed from the earlier one... however there appears to be no documentation to say what (if anything) has been fixed in these minor release builds?

I think you can set up your own filter in the Tracker that only includes issues that are specifically marked as Fixed in a particular build.

Give it a try, I haven't myself but I have set up another filter that shows all reported issues from the initial 4.0 build.

Thanks Nathan / Lars, I have to admit I didn't realise the tracker was kept going after the 4.0 release build, I thought it ended after the EAP. Makes sense now, thanks for the point in the right direction!!

NP, although it should really be Jetbrains telling us what is going on!

Maybe this would have been better handled by calling it a BETA. The EAP is
the ALPHA. This way it would be justified to have the 4.0 name, not 4.0.x.

Just discovered that the build number is now shown on the download page (still 1167) - thanks JetBrainers! Now we don't have to download and install in vain every hour :)
