How long to wait before purchasing 9.0?

Forgive me if this knowledge is available somewhere, I've looked, but when can I purchase IntelliJ IDEA and get a free upgrade to 9.0? I would love to purchase as soon as possible, but I don't want to buy it and then a month later have to pay for an upgrade to 9.0.

I don't know what date the free upgrade offer will take effect from, however
why not try either a trial version of 8.0 or the 9.0 EAP builds, until the
offer is announced? I'm guessing it's probably not all that far away.

That's what I've been doing. I used up my trial of 8.0, and I'm currently running Maia 10666. My EAP trial is almost up though, and I really don't want to have to go back to Eclipse or Netbeans at work. I don't know if each EAP build resets the trial, but the newest one was unable to successfully load our large project, so I'm not ready to update it.

Yes, every EAP build resets the trial. It's usually a good idea to report
specific problems if an EAP build fails for you.

I just tried the newer EAP build again, and it seems to be loading it alright this time. The problem before was the scanning of the files would exhaust the memory given to IDEA. In that case I should be OK, but is there any kind of estimate on when 9.0 will be released? Will it be out before the year's end?

I had serious problems with IDEA-9 M1 as far as usability was concerned. It would constantly index and re-index files. I was ready to give up and go back to IDEA-8 but as a last resort tried the EAP build (I'm currently on build # 10672). It is so much better and JetBrains have worked out the indexing kinks. It is back to develop with pleasure with the nice enhancements that JetBrains have made in IDEA-9.

By the way, I'm on a trial version myself for almost a year now. I got my trial license at the No Fluff Just Stuff symposium in Seattle in Oct. 2008. I'm definitely going to pay for IDEA-9 as soon as it's out. The wait is excruciating but the EAP works well and is quite stable. Thanks JetBrains.

Yes, the final release of 9.0 is planned for Q4'2009.

That's good to know.

It looks like I spoke too soon though about EAP build 10762, it's been indexing since I posted the last message. It's odd though, because it's completely unresponsive and it keeps showing and hiding the window that says "Building indices". I guess I'm back to 10666. For another 6 days. Not sure what I'll do at that point.
