Yep, it's quite annoying. Make with jikes still sort of works (in my
project anyway), after the project has been build with javac. I found
this request about it:

There is also some related problems there :
http://www.intellij.net/forums/thread.jsp?forum=13&thread=63053

I've also noticed that sometimes, jikes won't compile my project, but after
I recompiled it with Javac, I can compile again with Jikes... Really
weird... Wondering whether that comes from Jikes or from IntelliJ. Maybe a
Jikes' bug...

Do you get error messages? I get error message similar to this:

-

E:\Projects\test\src\com\test\test\Test.java

Error: line (9) Semantic Error : You need to modify your
classpath, sourcepath, bootclasspath, and/or extdirs setup. Package
"com/test" could not be found in:
-

Which is a strange error since "com/test" is part of the project I just
tried to build and compiling with javac works fine. After this jikes
hangs in the same way as the request you referenced.

By the way, I only get this with "clear output directory on rebuild" is
enabled.

I'll have a look at the error messages next time it happens, I promise.

Probably your class' fully qualified name doesn't match the directory structure where it is located (if to count from the directory
that is marked as 'source root'). Javac tolerates this.

Nope, that is not the case. This used to work in previous IDEA builds (I
think #1035). Also, IDEA does not mark it as an error, and if I recall
correctly IDEA too doesn't like it if the fully qualified name of a
class doesn't march the directory it's located.

Are you using "make" or "compile"?

Using make, this is definitely an issue in IDEA, and I believe there's an SCR filed with one of you guys saying it's a jikes bug.

In my case it's "rebuild" that goes wrong, but only when clear output
directory is enabled. Rebuild fails after a couple of classes, saying it
can't find several classes that are clearly in the very project it's
trying to compile and which are located in a directory matching their
package structure. After this I have to kill the jikes process because
it hangs. Now jikes won't "make" or "compile" anymore, giving the same
errors as on "rebuild".
There is a workaround: I can compile an individual class if I make sure
the classes it depends on are already compiled. Or I can use ANT to
compile my classes. Also "make" and "compile" work perfectly for me if I
only use javac for a "rebuild".
I haven't submitted an SCR for it because I believe it's the same as:
http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=23451

Of course I also suffer the other problems mentioned by Hani:
http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=26552
http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=24842
But that's only when I have failed to specify a jar needed for
compilation. They don't bother me so much, because killing jikes and
adding a library to my project fixes things. Which is a good thing,
because in this case building with ANT is not a workaround: in that case
jikes crashes (Program Error: jikes.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. etc.)
