IDEA 8.1.x Project loading blocking

We are using IDEA 8.1.3.  One of our projects is very large.

I work on one or two projects at the same time (I open each on its own window).

When I am opening a second project, let's say the very large one,
s there a way to have the loading tasks done in the background? so that I can continue working on the first project?

Very much I have to wait until all the caches, etc. are loaded to be able to do anything at all.  This can take up to 25 minutes or more.
Seems a waste of productivity time.
