Visual Source Safe - How 2 integrate ?

Guys,

This is the first time I'm trying to integrate IDEA with Visual Source Safe (Version 5.0). Client is installed in a network. I mapped my drive to the network and entered the following values.=:

VSC Support : SourceSafe
Path to VSS Client = F:\vss\win32\SSEXP.EXE
Path to VSS Configuration file : F:\vss\srcsafe.ini
User name : username
Password : password
VSS Project : $/project/bbi
Working Directory : C:\work\bbi

When I tried to do any operation like CheckOut, CheckIn etc. The actual operations does not happen. Instead, VSS opens up in a new window. I guess I've configured it in a wrong way. Could anybody help please.

Thanks in advance,
Skely

set "Path to VSS Client" to "F:\vss\win32\SS.EXE"

Path to VSS Client = F:\vss\win32\SSEXP.EXE is correct.
'SS.EXE' does not exist in that location.

When I try to perform any operation like CheckOut, IDEA invokes a new instance of Visual Source Safe. The Source Safe Client even shows the Project folder as selected. But it does'nt do the Check out operation. Moreover, I would'nt expect IDEA to spring up a new instance of VSS.

I'm wondering if this is because I'm using a network VSS Client. Should I have VSS client it installed locally?

I'm using Intellij 3.0.5 build #706 and VSS 5.00

that's happening because the .exe you're using is SSEXP (SourceSave EXPlorer) rather than SS.exe (merely SourceSafe). Here's my path variable...

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\VSS\win32\SS.EXE

If you don't have SS.exe, that sounds like a SourceSafe client installation issue.

That makes Sense. I will check my installation first.
Thank u very much for you suggestion :)

You definitely need to use ss.exe.
One more tip: in my company we have sourcesafe installed somehow on the network. To get ss.exe to work I had to set environment variable ssdir to
server\some_ss_folders

Thank you all folks for your suggestions. I finally got it working by installing VSS Client properly in my local machine pointing it to the VSS database on the network. It has the 'SS.EXE' as you specified. It works perfectly fine without any complains.

For newbies reference on this scenario:

Path to VSS Client = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\VSS\win32\SS.EXE
Path to VSS Configuration file (srcsafe.ini)= F:\vss\srcsafe.ini
(Note that F:\ is mapped drive on the network)

Thanks to you all.
