Creating Debian repository for Intellij IDEA

I am using IDEA for a long time and I would say it is a great product.

Also I am working on Ubuntu 7.04 right now and what I am missing here is a debian(ubuntu) repository with Intellij products (Idea, YourKitProfiler). APT is so cool tool for managing software so I would like to see idea upgrade process as

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

or installing idea as

sudo apt-get install idea (so APT will install required version of JDK and another required software)

I understand that checking news site for a new version and manually download and install it not very difficult thing, but I like to automate process that could be.

In this case APT would save several hours of my life...

Hardly... You might save a few seconds per version you install...

Irrespective of the APT issue, you should know that YourKit is a completely different and unrelated company from JetBrains.

I used to run a Fedora yum repositor for IDEA separated into the core
application, plugins, dev kit, and gnome menu integration. It worked
quite well and was used by a few people - thou it was legally somewhat
on questionable grounds - the files were freely downloadable and you
needed a licence still - but I believe it technically violated the
distribution/licence aggreement...

Worked quite well thou.

It is what I am talking about.

I would like to see publicly available repository for Debian, RedHat, ...... that could be used by thousands of people not just by a few co-workers. And of course you have to buy license by yourself.

I think it is great step to simplify installation/upgrade process on *nix systems. Also it is also possible to add record to Automatix (http://www.getautomatix.com/ nice GUI installation tool). And it would be right step for promotion IDEA in Linux users society.

PS. First time IDEA installation have taken for me several hours of searchin'/readin' articles in the Web.

What dependencies are needed for IDEA (jdk5 or jdk6??), where to setup IDEA_HOME env variables, how to run idea without running console??? Such kind of questions have any linux user that tries to run idea first time.

PPS If anybody has debian repository with idea *.deb I would be glad to help test it. OR if anybody has site and enough bandwidth for debian repository I could create package by itself and share it. What do you think?

Hey, guys.

I want to let you know that I am sharing small script that creates deb file from IDEA distribution. See sourcecode here http://github.com/anatol/idea2deb/tree/master

Actually I would like to see a "native" apt-repository for IDEA. It would be a way better than using this script. Also Intellij team could make idea distribution layout better (like moving binaries to /usr/bin and configs to /etc).

Anyway enjoy this small script - and if you could improve it - please do and share it for other people.
