IDEA Hangs After a Time

I am having this problem with both build 896 and 3.0.5. The problem is such that after using IDEA for awhile I will switch back to it from another application and will be presented with the IDE window which will never refresh and is unresponsive. This window will not close and I am forced to kill the process. This is happening on a fairly regular basis though I have not been able to reproduce it at will. Anyone have and ideas as to what the cause might be?

Solaris 9 (Sparc)
JDK 1.4.2
1024 MB RAM

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Could you get a thread dump when it hangs and send it to us?
(I don't know how to do this under Solaris, probably 'kill' with some
arguments.)

I've had the problem quite a bit with 3.0.4. Usually, I have found that waiting long enough seems to let it recover, but sometimes I might not have enough patience. My best guess is that it has something to do with file synchronization as I see that message on the status bar when it does eventually recover. Maybe Jetbrains is doing the synchronization code in the AWT Event Dispatch Thread, and hence IDEA never gets a change to redraw?

Well, of course it didn't happen again today. When/if it happens tomorrow I will be happy to provide a thread dump.

OK finally IDEA hung on me again this morning. Seems quite wrong to be wanting an application to misbehave. Anyway, I have attached the thread dump for your enjoyment. Let me know if there is something else you would like me to do.

PS Since only linux users have reported the problem for the moment and
Sun presumably give priority to Solaris then it probably would do no
harm at all to add your Solaris stack trace to the Sun bug

This happened to me in windows a couple of times. I'll remember to catch a stack trace the next time it happens.

I am having this problem too, on Win2k using 3.0.3. It's driving me crazy as it happens all the time. I have five different intellij windows open and 512MB dedicated to intellij (it's a complicated system).

It seems to happen more frequently with more windows and to be related to file synchronization, as John Murph reported. CPU usage is minimal so it seems to be hanging on a lock of some sort. With enough patience, it always comes back -- but you need a lot of patience!

Further information: When this happens it affects other tasks too, so it looks like you are holding a system semaphore of some sort. It's definitely Intellij as it only happens when Intellij is active.

PLEASE FIX THIS BUG!!!

You have an excellent product, but this bug alone could drive me to use something else.
