Well, it's the middle of Summer for one thing. The evenings are long and warm. People have families and friends and relations to see. It's vacation time. The kids are off school. If you're not going to get out and about then, when are you going to do it?
The cold, wet, dark evenings will be back soon enough. Plenty of time to do indoor and geeky things then.
And yes, most people use Idea at work. At $400 a pop for the licence, you're not going to get many home users. For that, you'll have to switch to Eclipse. I'll bet that sees many more hobby programmers.

Thats sad.. :( am hope some day Jetbains will prepare some "community" or "noncomercial" for us. To fight IBM,SUN, M$ they have to use their methods...
PS. Eclipse is gettig better and better in terms of functionality and usability. And 0$ is still better than 100$ for academic license (especialy when You get 200$/mo :)
Work and play MUST be separated in order to maintain sanity.
Unfortunately, I am currently doing my Sun Certified Developer for Java 2,
so that is currently my "play".
