Michael, You can have link directly to any message in discussion now. ( such link is available in message title on thread discussion page) i.e. link contained in watch notification e-mail points to concrete message instead of whole thread. Such message is highlighted then.
a idea from me which comes up in this moment is that all messages which are new after the last visit from the user have another background(like the threads in the forums).what's your opinion to this idea?

why do you change the color of the thread. it will be better when you change the color of the thread-head(subject, posted by...)!
