Import EAR project into IDEA?

Hi,

How do I import an EAR project into IDEA? Similarly, how do I import a WAR project into IDEA. I have an EAR file which I need to import in IDEA.

I know how to export them in the above mentioned formats but am still not able to figure out a way to import them which admittedly is very frustrating as I believe importing an EAR into a Java/J2EE is a basic functionality. Any help will be appreciated.

Regards.

Both ear and war files are deployment artifacts.
They are not projects, e.g. they do not (usually) contain any source.
So what exactly do you mean with "import" (and why do you think this is basic functionality)?

Specifically:

I have an EAR file which I need to import in IDEA.

What does this ear file contain and what do you want Idea to do with those contents?

By importing EAR project, I mean that I need to import the java, jsp files which are included in the EAR. In RAD we do this all the time. If I need to send the project to one of my team-mates (assuming SVN or CVS is not setup), I just give him the EAR (through export option of RAD) which he imports it in his version of RAD. He then just needs to setup the server and he is on par.

If Eclipse has this functionality of importing an EAR, why is it absent in IDEA. Or am I missing something here? Thanks in advance.

Basically RAD is abusing the EAR format as a project exchange.

What you should do with rad is use the "project interchange format" which preserves much more of the development artifacts.

Finally, nothing in the EAR specification indicates whether or where the source files for all the java / submodules should be stored in the EAR. GUess I would even consider putting sources a questionable practice

Thibaut is correct.

Also note that Eclipse itself does not have that functionality...the plugins built on top of Eclipse for Websphere allows that. This the first time I have heard of an EAR file containing java code!

If someone sent me an EAR file to "import" a project with I would probably beat them over the head with my keyboard.

Never heard of doing anything of the kind.

The code should be source control with a build.xml file (or if you use maven whatever maven uses) that enables you to build the ear file.

haha....exactly! Another reason I hate WSAD.

I understand your sentiments against WSAD/RAD. That's why I wanted to try out IDEA. Given that importing projects in the form of EARs is a very bad idea, can you please tell me how do I go about importing an Eclipse workspace into IDEA. I did try the IDEA's Eclipse plugin provided with the my 6.05 release. However, I only managed to generate an IPR file with the Java source code. I wasn't able to retrieve the JSP files, and the dependent library files. Can you please help me importing these files into IDEA. Thanks in advance.
