Filename tooltip

I saw a previous post (2003?) regarding files status information being displayed in the project pane. I feel that customizable tooltip-like functionality for the files displayed in the project pane would be beneficial. Some files we deal with have names that are simply unique ids, which becomes non-productive when switching between files since we are better suited to remembering names. It would be nice to assign hidden names to these files that could be displayed in a tool-tip like manner. If this functionality was customizable it could also allow for the display of other information associated with the file (e.g. status, modification date ..) Thanks in advance.
