I prefer not to install one build over another. Some people have run in to
problems doing so, but others have said they do it all the time without any
problems. I'd rather reduce the risk, so here's how I do it:

1) Rename the old installation's home directory from "idea" (your home
directory's name may vary) to "ideaOLD".

2) Unzip new build into a directory named "idea".

3) Move the "jre" directory from the old installation to the new one (unless
a newer version is available at
http://www.intellij.net/eap/products/idea/download.jsp).

4) Copy all plugins from the old installation to the new one.

5) Make a backup of the config directory, just in case. The default
location for it is at C:\Documents and
Settings\[USER_NAME]\.IntelliJIdea\config

If you've modified your startup script (in /bin), you'll want to
copy that to the new installation, too.

That should do it. Hope this helps,

chris
