Idea sends unknown information going out of firewall?

I just recommendated Idea to a friend of mine and he loves it. But then he told me that he noticed that Idea is sending something out through his firewall. - I don't think Idea is anything close to a spyware but it will be nice to know what is going on behind the scene with this "sending information out without explict acknowledgement".

Does anyone have the answer? BTW, it is not because of the "check for update" feature.

When it starts up IDEA looks on the network for any other instances of IDEA running with the same license key. My firewall at home picked it up too. It basically stops people on the same network sharing licences. I don't think it is not sending out any personal details or doing anything dodgy.

Yes, even though it only looks on the local (sub)net, if the firewall is on
an individual machine it will still go out to your ISP's subnet (or your local
lan if any).
