why is GLUE not a plugin ?

I like the plugin concept not only for adding stuff but also for NOT
adding stuff and keeping my idea as lightweight as possible :)

For example, after i download a new build, I remove the starteam and
tomcat plugins (and add the one i use instead).

Another piece of functionality I am not using is integration with Glue.
As an intergation with an external product IMO it should be delivered as
a plugin, not something that IDEA is required to load.

This example shows that we ourselves suffered from insufficient Open API for
integrating such kinds of things.

Edoardo,

Can you explain how you remove the Starbase plug-in? I totally agree with you that integration with external tools/products should be optional. It would be really cool if IntelliJ can emulate JBoss's architecture where users can remove/add components at will so you are running with just the stuff you need :-).

Another question I have is I am assuming the load time will definitely be shorter if these external tools are not loaded, but is the runtime actually faster?

remove plugins by deleting their files from the ]]>/plugins directory. I dont think idea will run significantly faster

If you keep WebServices support's checkbox unchecked, nothing
considerable gets loaded. This is the same for many things that are not
exposed as plugins, but just built in to the IDEA with options to turn
them on and off.

If you have specific problems with perfomance, please, sumbit them to
the tracker.
