Yep, they're probably going to abandon their current JBuilder and use Eclipse as a base to integrate with Together for their next product. At least thats what I read is the speculation.

I wouldnt really say that ControlCenter was in direct competition with IDEA anyway. Togethers market is completely different than Intellij's IMHO.

p.s. wish there was an edit feature on these boards.

Sure we know. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts on the whole thing? I don't really care. I stopped using Borland's products a while ago because of their insane release and upgrade schedules/price lists. Together's pricing on ControlCenter is prohibitive for my team so I don't use that either. If TogetherJ Solo wasn't the company modeling tool standard I'd probably move to MagicDraw.

Plus, I like code editors and things that assist my coding vs. tools that try to take the code out of my hands. Both of the above two companies do the latter while IDEA does the former. I hope that is kept in mind when designing new functionality for IDEA in the future.

They are not merged.
Borland bought ThogetherSoft, so no change in name.

I think you guys shoulda bought Togethersoft and integrated it with IDEA! got a spare $143million?

But seriously, I think it could be pretty cool if they integrate with eclipse2 to build a new product. JBuilder is not my cup of tea, ControlCenter is a better IDE even without the modeling but neither really can even hold a candle to IDEA as far as I'm concerned in their current forms.

The only way I could see myself interested is if they do in fact build off of eclipse2+together,otherwise straight up integration with current jbuilder or control center by itself doesnt really excite me.

"I like code editors and things that assist my coding vs. tools that try to take the code out of my hands"

I think the above quote hits the nail on the head.

JBuilder and Control Center are two of the most bloated, slow, clunky pieces of software I've used. I like IDEA because it's slick and tightly focussed - "develop with pleasure" really is true only for IDEA.

2.6 is so slick on Window$ and Linux that it feels like a native application and destroys the myth that Java/Swing applications are inherently slow.

I hope the IDEA team don't lose sight of what (imho) makes their product so fantastic. I hope they don't try to emulate what Borland/TogetherSoft have done with their inferior IDEs and refrain from adding bloat - people have already started requesting a GUI editor, UML editing and so on...

When we wanted a new IDE we checked everything that exists, including
JBuilder and Together. Although they have things IDEA doesn't (UML, UI
design, etc.) they lacked the brains that IDEA had, which was more important
to us. I can't see any change because of that acquisition. The products will
not gain IDEA smarts and will not become as friendly because of that. In
fact, this could mean confusion in the unified company pitch and less
competition to IDEA.

Keep it up, I can really say I enjoy writing in Java now. I only wish I
would have a JavaScript environment such as this.

Well If anybody could do it right, Jetbrains can!

Hey Eugene I read somehwere maybe on these boards or theserverside that the core of Jetbrains were ex-togethersoft developers is that true?

I truly agree!

IDEA is the best IDE that I have ever used. It beats any other Java or VB product that I have tried. The only think lacking in IDEA is the DHTML/JavaScript support that can be found in Visual Studio.

Keep up the good work IDEA Team! To infinity and beyond!

Another thought:

I believe that the company that will be first in fully supporting new JVM
technologies such as hot swapping compiled code during runtime will have an
edge.

Borland and Together are not competitors for IDEA.
But not for the reason you think.
They are simply in another price league.
Don't underestimate them.
The real competition for IDEA is Eclipse.
IBM is doing an amazing job, and Eclipse is free.

Well, when we searched for a new IDE we initially didn't look at the price.

Right now another section in the company is evaluating IDEA and the others,
and I think that IDEA will prevail (about 50 licenses).

I think that it's not true that only the free tools are a competition.
