idea cvs vs Eclipse

My co-workers are dancing and doing flips around me with their dextrous use
of cvs in Eclipse.

My Idea is lagging. I no longer feel productive with Idea and CVS;-(.

You should file and/or vote for requests in JIRA. What does Eclipse CVS do that
IDEA doesn't?

:)
Their kcufing Synchronization and Merging conflicts are realy may force them to dance :)

Eclipse can't merge as good as IDEA, becouse Eclipse never merge Java code.
Eclipse can't show Annotation as inlined pane in Editor
Eclipse can't show history for selection
Eclipse can't show history for class/method etc
Eclipse can't handle charsets correctly

The Eclipser around me use Eclipse to 'Synchronize' changes. For all other operations used WinCVS - taging, create branches, checkout moudules, browse repository :)

So, peoples dancing around your person - is just hidden attempt to spy that is Real IDE (tm) means!

One thing tha I miss from Eclipse and feature of most other IDEs is CREATING A #ucking PATCH

I have to create/apply/remove patches from cygwin.
That is definatly not as productive as Eclipse.

I hoped that 5.0 would have it, now I hope for the next release.

Try putting a request in Jira. They may have the time to put it in.

You should vote for http://jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEABKL-2962

It looks like it's currently slated for Demetra, i.e. IDEA 6.

Ciao,

About six months ago I moved from eclipse to intellij, and in almost every respect intellij is way ahead of eclipse. However, when it comes to CVS, although you do some things better (such as merging, inline file differences) I find that I feel a little less certain when using it in comparison to eclipse's synchronize view.

I am not the only person to have found this, another team member who switched from eclipse almost switched back to eclipse after an unpleasant experience with intellij CVS. I don't actually think much overall work is required to make it better, I think the way it works just needs some restructuring.

Maybe do what the eclipse team do to intellij, and take some requirements from the synchronize perspective in eclipse. This works well, and is very easy to understand.

I provide one example: when refactoring a package name, the old package is left "floating around" until the next commit. When several such refactorings are required before a commit, it leaves quite a mess in the project view.

I now only use Eclipse for only one thing.

Eclipse's update makes it very easy to review changes. I use this a lot to review code contributed from the rest of my team and accept or reject. There is no direct equivalent to this that I can find in IDEA.

I absolutely agree. Where I work, we merge CVS branches into HEAD with each release. In addition to simple mistakes that IDEA makes regarding conflict detections (http://www.intellij.net/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=212813&tstart=0), Eclipse's "tree view" display makes it vastly superior for merging. Also, Eclipse allows you to choose a common branch ancestory by selecting a CVS tag.

On a related note, I currently copy & hand-edit IDEA's ipr/iml files to point to a different branch. It would be nice if that was an operation I could do from within IDEA.

For development, I use happily use IDEA. For CVS merging, I use Eclipse. I look forward to the day when I might use IDEA for both.
