Status of sporadic freeze/hang (during gabage collection?)

Using IDEA, I regularly encounter cases where the system is entirely frozen ("not responding" in Windows) for a period of time, sometimes 10 or 15 seconds, sometimes a minute or two or more. Everyone else in our office encounters the same thing.

I saw one or two other mentions of this in the forum, but indirect ones. The other people in our office using IDEA also experience this problem. It seems to occur as memory use approaches maximum (I have max set for 512K).

Is this a known problem? Are there reasonable workarounds?

It occurs when IntelliJ performs a garbage collection. I've encountered the same problem and decrease the Xmx from 512 to 384 to avoid waiting too much time when this phenomenon appears.

Thanks, Gilles.

Reducing stack size is not practical as we we have some cases where we need that much memory.

Is this then purely a phenomenon of Java, or is there something that IDEA can do to mitigate the problem.

There are a million and one ways to reconfigure the garbage collector, eg
see http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc1.4.2/index.html. There are even more
options in JDK5 and JD6.

I personally haven't had a need to change these settings much so I can't
say what works best, but many people on these newsgroups have mentioned the
different settings they've been using to help IDEA run more smoothly.

Thanks, Gilles.
