FreeBSD startup problem

Don't feel bad. You're not the only one that can't use IDEA anymore. Those of us that use OS X, Linux PPC, Solaris, VMS, OS/2, or any other non Windows, non Linux, non i386 machine can't use it either.

I'm not sure that pre-JRE versions Ariadna have ever runned on any of this
platforms. (OSX is not supported from migration to JDK 1.4 which has nothing
to do with JRE bundling).
So, what's the reason of such a tone?

I never mentioned JRE bundling (in this post). I was stating a fact, JRE bundling or not: Those of us that don't use Windows or Linux on an Intel i386 platform cannot use the latest builds of Ariadna.

And if Ariadna is supposed to be IDEA 3.0, then we cannot use IDEA 3.0 when it is released. Or so it seems.

What ever happened to releasing a version of IDEA 3.0 that is supposed to work with JDK 1.3.1?

And since you brought it up: Ariadna up to build 629 does work on OS X (and presumeably the other platforms I mentioned). Shouldn't you know this?

And since you brought it up: My tone is a bit harsh because from my perspective JetBrains has no regard for their users that use "different" platforms. All I want is an official statement saying you will be supporting us, but based on your recent actions, I have no choice but to draw my own conclusions.

And for the record, I don't really care if you bundle a JRE or not, just do it for EVERY PLATFORM that IDEA 2.6 currently runs on. Don't leave your users out in the cold.

Mike and you are saying the same thing. Idea 630 was the first java 1.4 build, and this is what stopped it working on OS X.

Interestingly, according to idea's dot com site (http://www.intellij.com/support/faq/general.jsp) Idea not only runs under OS X, it even includes a built-in keymap!

And for the record, I don't really care if you bundle

Sorry for splitting hairs, but I don't "think" that IDEA runs on other unix platorms, I know it does. And I know this from experience. I've run it not only on Windows and Linux, but on OS X, Solaris, and Linux PPC. But alas, that was before the 1.4 requirement and now the custom JRE requirement.

Exactly. So either they need to fix Ariadna so it actually runs everywhere 2.x does, or they need to fix their site and stop giving us a false sense of security.

My company bought 4 or 5 licenses of IDEA 2.x. In doing so, we also bought the ability to upgrade for free for 1 year. And now, as far as I can tell, when 3.0 comes out we won't be able to take advantage of what we paid for. And soon, when I have to walk upstairs and tell management that the software we bought, less than a year ago, is no longer supported on all our platforms I get to take the heat for making the bad decision. ]]>

Concerning "custom JRE requirement":

Here's a way to make the "custom jre":

1. Copy the jre directory to idea-home directory
2. Copy jdk-home/lib/tools.jar to idea-home/jre/lib/tools.jar
3. Copy javac executable from jdk-home/bin to idea-home/jre/bin

IDEA should start with this configuration.
