IDEA 5.0 - customize component toolbar

Hello all,

I've just recently started to use IDEA 5.0 after years of using Emacs
and have found it to be quite to my liking. There is one minor point
with which I am having some trouble.

I do a lot of GUI stuff and would like to have all of the Swing
components and some other GUI components available on the GUI toolbar. I
have following the instructions at
http://www.intellij.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IntelliJUIDesignerGuide#Customizing_component_toolbar
but can't seem to get things to work. Using the GUI designer settings I
can get the controls to appear, but I can't get the icons to appear and
having 12 different Greedo heads on the toolbar doesn't help as I have
to search through the tool tips to find the component I want. Here are
the questions.

The first tip on the mentioned page mentions the %IDEA_CONFIG%. In a
Windows setup, which directory would this be?

The same tip mentions /com/intellij/uiDesigner/default-palette.xml in
resources.jar. I can find resources.jar, but its layout doesn't have the
above mentioned path. Has 5.0 changed from previous versions?

The IDE itself has a settings screen to manage palettes. Where are the
files generated by this tool? Also, the documentation mentions a browser
(...) button for the icon field, I have no such button. Is this a future
feature?

Any help on getting this working would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and regards,
Jay

It looks like you've found bugs in the UI designer component palette settings.
You should file issues at http://jetbrains.net/jira. You shouldn't need to mess
with those xml files, you should only need to use the palette settings within
IDEA. The guide you read is outdated, from before this settings existed.

Great, I thought that the guide might have been from some earlier
version. After some playing I got the full Swing components toolbar
going by putting the resources-ext.jar in the $IDEA_HOME/lib directory,
and I assume that I'll be able to do something similar for the icons of
other components I use, so I'm mostly satisfied. The only thing missing
is the mentioned browse button for locating icons. I'll have to do a
little more investigating and then submit a report.

Thanks and regards,

I submitted a report for this very issue just last Thursday:
http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-4616
You might want to vote for it.
