Is PhpStorm EAP Free?

Hello,

I have been using PhpStorm EAP for a while and until recently every time I would update to the latest version my 30 days would be extented.

I didn't use PhpStrom in a some time, it expired, and even though  I updated to the latest EAP, it is still showing as expired and it gives me 30 minutes of use.

Did something change regarding the EAP versions and they are no longer free, or could I have done something wrong?

Thanks

Hi there,

Did something change regarding the EAP versions and they are no longer free,

No, nothing has been changed.

or could I have done something wrong?

No .. you just misunderstood how it works.

EAP (Early Access Program) builds are free (have their own 30-day license) for major releases (e.g. 6.0, 7.0, 8.0) as they have lots of new/not-yet-polished code and features.

EAP builds for minor releases (e.g. 7.0.1, 7.1.3 etc) require proper valid license since they are mostly just a maintenance releases which mainly consists of bug fixes and other rather small improvements.

Summary:

  • Current EAP builds require valid license.
  • Once v8 EAP program will start, those EAP builds will be free.
  • After v8.0 final will be released, all subsequent EAP builds will once again require valid license.

Thanks.

So if I buy a licence now, and then after say 2-3 months, EAP 8 comes out and I want to use 8 instead of 7. Would I be able to upgrade to 8 EAP using my licence?

Not exactly. EAP builds of pre-release versions (v8 EAP) have their own license and you cannot replace it. But yes -- you just install v8 EAP build and you can use it (even in parallel to v7).

But once v8.0 FINAL will be released, you will be able to import your license from v7.
