javax.imageio.IIOException

Please forgive me if this has been addressed in the past, butI tried a search and couldn't find anything on it.

When I run IDEA without an internet connection, I consistently get a javax.imageio.IIOException, could not load background imageerror for various screens. In fact, IDEA sometimes become unusable because the dialog box displaying the message refuses to quit popping up. As an example, attempting to change the method signature on a interface causes this to happen.

Now, this could be my own dumb fault because I'm running jdk 1.5-rc with IDEA 4.5.1, which probably isn’t supported, Nevertheless, If anyone has any advice, I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
Max

1.5 JRE is not indeed supported. IDEA should only run under provided JRE.

I'm evaluating IDEA for my department, and I need to see how it works under various environments: I know that JDK 1.5 isn’t supported, as I stated in my original post: But the nature of this problem doesn't seem to be jdk dependant.

The issue seems to be that IDEA is trying to load images from the web. There must be some way to cache those images locally, or to tell idea not to try to do so. If anyone knows how to do this, I'd appreciate your help.

When you say that you are "running jdk 1.5-rc" do you mean that you

1. have replaced the jre that comes with IntelliJ, or

2. simply that you have created a project that "uses/compiles with" 1.5.

You apparently can't do #1, however, jdk 1.5 is fully suppported by
4.5.1. That is you can develop against 1.5 and all syntax is fully
supported in the editor, etc.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for taking an interest. AFIK, this isn't a JDK dependent issue. I suspect it's probably a settings issue, and not a bug. But it's annoying, and it's handicapping IntelliJ in the review process.

For example, I can't evaluate IntelliJ's ability to re factor interface signatures, because it doesn't seem to do so when you're not connected to the internet. Any thoughts on how to get around this?

Thanks,
M

IDEA never loads any images or any other info from the web actually.
Could you please post a full stacktrace so we can investigate what's
going on there?
The only exceptions for network communications are:
1. LAN license collision check.
2. Check for a new IDEA version (according to user preference to do so).
3. Reporting an exception bug via error reporter (again upon direct user
order to do so).

It sounds like Max might have the "Background Image" plugin installed.

You're right: uninstalling the plug-in did the trick. Thanks!

Instead of uninstalling, you could also just change the background image to a local file, instead of remote. I think that would do the trick as well. I've been running with a background image now for a couple weeks, and I really like it.
