Don't forget the documentation

Just a reminder to the IntelliJ guys. Reviews of IDEA 2.0 and 2.5
consistently complained about the poor/incomplete documentation.

Hello Juan:

Have no worries, however, because we're fixing that now and will be proving
enough documentation goodies in the future. However, IDEA is so easy to
use, do you really need so much? :)

There are many 'features' that make IntelliJ a pleasure to use.

However some of these features are not well documented. I often find out
about some great feature by reading the IntelliJ news groups. News groups
are a poor substitute for good product documentation.

No matter how many great features a product may have, if they are not known
to the users, they may as well not exist.

I would say that IDEA is powerful and useful, and I'd even say it's easy
to use once you know how, but it's not easy to learn how to use.

IDEA, more than most programs I have used, really needs good
documentation. (Or perhaps the program needs to be changed to make it
easier to use.)

It's good to hear that! I didn't need much documentation. However, the Tip
of the Day feature was very helpful (probably the first useful TotD ever!),
and, like Ted Hill, I found several nuggets buried in the forums. I'm more
concerned about the reviews and the acceptance of IDEA by the masses, thats
all...

Hello David,
Do you consider creating IDEA Video mini tutorial ?
See e.g. Logo Video tutorial at
http://webpages.charter.net/georgemills/download/mswtut52.zip
It would be really impressive to see e.g. 'Hello World' program completely
refactored in several buttons clicks!

I agree that instructional videos would be great, but I would recommend
using viewlets (http://www.qarbon.com/) to do this. The visual quality
and smoothness of the video is much better than when using screen
capture to an avi. Since a freeware version of the viewlet builder is
availabel, we could maybe even have user contributed viewlets on the
community site?

Hello Alexey:

Thanks for the recommendation. This is certainly something we may be able
to look into in the future.

In the meantime, everyone's concerns will be addressed, we're hoping, with
the release of 3.0 -- which should come documented to everyone's approval.
And of course, many sections of this to be released documentation will be
relevant to older version of IDEA.

Thanks for the input!
