Recover from crash

Hi,
since version 7, i have had lot of annoying crashes. (ubuntu 13.10 64 bits, java 7.0_45 b18).
But what annoys me more is when i launch webstorm again, all my unsaved changes are lost.
Would it be possible to add an auto recover feature ala Microsoft Word ? Webstorm would constantly save a temporary file with current unsaved changes and be able to recover it in case of crash.

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

Even MS Word does not *constantly* save your work -- ony after some delay / idle time.

Similar functionality is already present in IDE: "Settings | General" -- check out those "Save files..." options there.

I know about the "save when idle" feature.
However i'm developing for meteor which watch the sources for changes and rebuild/relaunch when files have been modified.  So i'm only saving my files when i know the source will be in a "runnable" state.

@anata chris

Check yourself at "Settings/Preferences | Appearance & Behaviour | System Settings"

But that's different auto-save as compared to what Alexey have mentioned. That one happens at different moments: after you saving Settings/Preferences; before you will use Run/Debug Config; before executing command in Terminal (or after focusing it); before running unit tests etc

P.S. As for file recovery -- you may also try Local History to see if previous version of a file is available.

That was some spam

Bumping up the issue. Losing changes after a WebStorm crash is extremely annoying.

No, I can't use "Save when idle" because of the same reason that my file watcher would rebuild the app -- and as far as I can see, this is very common practice at least in front-end development. I haven't seen a single JS developer who doesn't use hot reload (rebuilding the app on file change) -- this is an industry standard now.

Sublime Text, for example, handles saving perfectly fine w/ temporary files. That's a shame WebStorm can't do it.

Sorry, but this is not possible. The IDE relies on auto-save to keep preserve your sources. So if you disable it...

I'd like to hear more on those crashes though. Are there any logs generated?

Evinogradov, I don't think anyone has made a feature request out of it, at least I can't find it on the tracker.
Please submit one mentioning your concerns and Sublime Text: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue?project=WEB
