Help a newbie

I am starting to learn JavaScript and Jquery. I'm trying to run an example program. The book says I have to run it from the webserver (which is on the same machine), for the example to work. However, it's not working. How do I setup WS to debug the file as it runs on the webserver? I tried Open URL and added a breakpoint, but I wasn't able to see any variables or step through the code.
