How do I use the patch-based upgrade?

I am attempting to upgrade PyCharm from version 3.0.1 to 3.1.2.  I only see the option to download the upgrade.  What is the process to use the patch-based upgrade?

The PyCharm 3.1.2 build is available for download, and you can also use the patch-based upgrade to upgrade from previous PyCharm versions without a full reinstallation.

Patch based upgrade only works between two subsequent releases (or builds for the early access program). Thus, it's not possible to use it to upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2.

You can vote for IDEABKL-6240 but this very unlikely to be changed :-(

This is true in general. But now we are trying to provide more patches for PyCharm. But still there are no patches between major versions yet.

Thanks for the information.  Is there any information / documentation you can point me to for upgrading between major versions to retain current settings?

You can export your settings from PyCharm's File menu, then import them after the new major version is installed.

Got it.  Upgrade complete.  Thanks for your help.
