Disappearing cursor

Answered

I am running RubyMine version 7.1.4.

I am having a problem where every couple hours or so my cursor disappears. I do not know specific steps to reproduce.

When it is happening and I click somewhere it highlights the line in yellow. I can't type anything in this state.

I have to either wait a long time for the cursor to return or completely restart the IDE (which takes too long but that's another issue).

I turned on power save mode and that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

The issue should be resolved soon with a fix for the next issue.

I'm still running into this problem.  I'm on:

- Rubymine 8.0.2 (Build #RM-143.1184)
- Mac OS X 10.9.5
- JRE 1.8.0_40-release-b105 x86_64
- JVM OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM by JetBrains s.r.o

I took a look in the logs and it looks like 'Too many events posted' seems to be thrown around the same time as the problem occurring.

I restart the app and it works again but it's an annoying problem to have.

That's unfortunate Rebecca.

The issue was resolved for me since switching to version 8.

I am also having the same issue in PHP Storm:

I'm having the same issue. The work I'm doing right now requires I do a lot of "Find in Path..." actions, and I'm running into this issue multiple times a day.

Has anyone found a solution?

I have the same problem in WebStorm. Sometimes the caret can disappear when I switch between editor's tabs or on other events. I have to restart the app to get the caret back.

This used to happen to me every couple of months in Android Studio but now it is happening every couple of days.  It has got to be one the most annoying and most unforgivable problems I have ever seen.  How the f**k can you release an editor with a disappearing cursor?!  How is this good software?  A cursor is one of the most fundamental elements and cursor issues on this software stretch back for two years.  It boggles the mind!  Chronic problems such as this only occur in poorly-designed software.

Please stop spreading yourselves too thin by inventing new languages and god knows what else and focus on the fundamentals!

Same issue:

  • Cursor will disappear

  •  I can still select text

  • I can not type

  • Waiting 5 minutes it will normally come back

  • Since I don't want to wait that long I normally close and reopen PhpStorm to fix the issue

I have the same issue as people are describing above. I come back after alt-tabbing, and the cursor is gone. I can still mark text, but whenever I try to type it thinks I'm in another view (e.g. the project view, so when I press the backspace button to remove marked texts I get a pop-up that asks if I really want to delete my class).

Hi there,

I had the same problem in PHPStorm. I switched from my Imac to a Macbook Pro and the missing cursor problem never happened. Both machines have the same OS versions and same JRE, JVM build etc. (I did a carbon copy of the system drive) The only difference is that the Imac has a AMD graphics card and the Macbook Pro a NVIDIA. So maybe it's a graphics driver/implementation bug?

Would be curious to know what brand of graphics cards the computers use where the dissappearing cursor problem occurs.

I am having same issue. Latest 2017.3.3 build and JDK 8, plenty of RAM and CPU.
What is going on, have to restart it every half an hour or so.

Same here :(

Windows 10 pro

JDK:

java version "1.8.0_151"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_151-b12)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.151-b12, mixed mode)

IntelliJ IDEA Community 2017.3.2

Steps:

- Edit > Find > Find in path

- Double click over occurrence found.

I can confirm this happens quite often throughout the day. Only a complete restart solves the problem.

"Find in Path" is a main culprit, see Sergios comment above mine to reproduce.

Looks like in my case it was somehow related to Nvidia drivers, when I updated to latest drivers from nvidia site problem just disappeared.
Also I did not have that issues on another computer where I used same version of IDEA, this is also confirms my suspicion about PC configuration itself contributed to this problem.
