Oracle JDK and OpenJDK differences ...

When I launch RM (or other JetBrains IDE's) with openjdk on Ubuntu Linux, I get the following message:

WARNING: You are launching the IDE using OpenJDK Java runtime.

ITS KNOWN TO HAVE PERFORMANCE AND GRAPHICS ISSUES!

SWITCH TO THE ORACLE(SUN) JDK BEFORE REPORTING PROBLEMS!

NOTE:    If you have both Oracle (Sun) JDK and OpenJDK installed

please validate either RUBYMINE_JDK, JDK_HOME, or JAVA_HOME environment variable points to valid Oracle (Sun) JDK installation.

See http://ow.ly/6TuKQ for more info on switching default JDK.

If I press on and use OpenJDK (1.7.0_09 in this case), I get a reasonable behavior, but still, I worry that I should be using Oracle JDK as suggested by the message above.

So, my question is can someone at JetBrains explain the nature (symptoms, log messages etc.) of problems that we run into when we insist on using openjdk?

Regards,
Kedar

Hi,

I'm not sure there is a complete list of possible problems, but here is at least I'm aware of - you may experience slow rendering performance due to slow
font rendering.  Also OpenJDK is not supported jdk thus as soon as you will have any problem you will be asked to try Oracle JDK first.

Regrads, Oleg.
