Workspace is set of project (.ipr) files, i guess. Your plugin allow in one
project have a grouped files, that can be loaded in editor.

I think it will be in File->Reopen->Project Groups->...
How delete or configure existing workspace?

Thanks! :)

Hello Chris,

I'm not accustomed to "workspaces". Could you therefor please give a
short overview, what are the benefits of this plugin?

Tom

I'm using the term "workspace" to mean a collection of files (.java, .txt,
etc) within a single project.

All interaction with and management of workspaces is performed via the
"Workspaces" menu which should appear in the main menu (to the left of the
"Help" menu). In that menu you should see a "Create New from Open
File(s)..." option for creating new workspaces. You should also see a
"Configure..." option to rearrange and delete existing workspaces (i haven't
implemented rename yet).

Let me know if you have questions,

thanks,

chris

Sorry, i forgot to mention that all workspaces you create will also appear
in the Workspaces menu. You can open and close a workspace simply by
selecting it in the menu. Open workspaces are marked with a check.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, sorry--i uploaded it around 2:30 AM so i'm sure I was clear as mud :)
Sorry for the lack of explanation. (though, with little sleep i can't
promise this post will do any better, but i'll try...)

I'm using the term "workspace" to mean simply a named collection of files
(.java, .txt,
etc) within a single project. This plugin allows you to bind a name to a
set of one or more files and then open/close that set of files as a group.
You can create as many as you want and arrange them in the Workspaces menu
in any order you like.

Whether the plugin has any benefit is a matter of opinion , but here
are a couple situations that i intended it to address:

1) I sometimes find that there are certain sets of files that i need to have
open together because they have some sort of relationship and that if i edit
one i often need to edit another. I find that some web app config files
fall into this category. Also certain JSPs and associated Java classes.

2) The whole workspaces concept was was idea proposed by Jon Steelman as a
response to a question i posed in the jetbrains.intellij.eap.features
newsgroup (http://www.intellij.net/forums/thread.jsp?forum=3&thread=10549).
Basically, i was complaining that sometimes i'd be working on a few files
and then someone would call and i'd open up a bunch of other files while
discussing their question. But when i wanted to get back to work i wanted
an easy way to return to just the files i was editing. This plugin provides
a fairly simple way to do that--here's an example:

  • When i answer the call, i first create a workspace containing the files i

currently have open (if i haven't already).

  • I then open whatever files i need during the discussion

  • When the call is over, i can optionally create a new workspace containing

the files we talked about, just in case we might need to have a followup
discussion. When creating the new workspace, i can check an option to only
include files that don't already belong to a workspace--that ensures that
the new workspace only contains files we talked about in the call.

  • Now i can get back to work by closing all the files, and then just

re-opening the workspace for the stuff i was working on before the call.

Hope this helps--let me know if you have questions/suggestions/comments.

thanks!

chris

Hi Chris,

This is terrific! I've just installed and started working with it.
Thanks for making the concept real!

Cheers,
Jon
