What's the Update button on the Maven.Repositories settings screen good for?

Hi all!

What's the Update button on the Maven.Repositories settings screen good for?
The help isn't very conclusive: "Click this button to update indices of the selected repository."
https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/help/maven-repositories.html

Are we supposed to update the indices whenever we install a new SNAPSHOT into the repo?
What are the indices good for? When are they used? When ought they be updated?

Brgrds,

Christian

Hi Christian,

Maven repository indices used for fast search of available artifacts, by maven coordinates (e.g. in dependency completion) or by class name.
It's usefull to update some repository indices (local or remote repository) only when you expect to get information for newly deployed artifacts (e.g. new version of libraries you use in the project) and you use IDE features like:
maven dependencies completion in pom files or generation of maven dependencies using Maven Artifact Search dialog, see details at  https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/help/generating-maven-dependencies.html

So, normally, it's not necessary to update indices for you local repo after you install SNAPSHOT version artifact.
