Slow debugging on Linux... Ubuntu Breazy
Hey all,
I remember the thread from 2-3 weeks back about slow as hell debugging under linux on the newer 2.6.14+ kernels and I'm now also seeing very slow debugging under 2.6.12:
Linux moonspell 2.6.12-10-386 #1 Sat Mar 11 16:13:17 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
on my Breazy Badger machine. The suggested 'quickfix' doesn't work as the proc params don't exist in this kernel.
I'm also running the latest mustang b82 build.
Hmmm, I wonder if the bug fix in the mustang builds is actually triggering a similar slow down on the older kernels... mmmm.
Anyone still getting slow debugging out there?

Try this as root:
sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_abc=0
This should/could help. I hope this is not the "quickfix" that does not
work for you.

AFAIK this is the only possible workaround (if not downgrading the kernel version)
JPDA guys promiced to fix this in Mustang EA builds (already available) and Java 5 builds (this fall)

Running the "/sbin/sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_abc=0" command seemed to speed things up for me on Fedora Core 5 and with Gentoo 2006.0 (both x86_64). The FC5 kernel is 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 on one machine and 2.6.16-1.2111_FC5 on the other.
Granted... it's still not lightning fast like it was before, but it sped it up to the point where it's only taking seconds to load data instead of minutes.
What, exactly is that command specifying (out of curiosity)?
Running a quick lookup now that I got a chance, I was able to find out what that does.
Running that will change the algorithm that breaks up TCP packets.
You can find more information running a Google search.

The information I read was from there and this thread in particular:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;:WuuT?bug_id=6401245
The only bad thing is that you have to do it every time you reset the system. In 99% of the cases, though, I'm sure no one is rebooting all that much unless they get a kernel upgrade or update SELinux data.
I just experienced this mysqlf after upgrading Ubuntu Breezy to Dapper. I wonder why I wasn't running into it on Breezy. The kernel versions weren't much different.
Thanks for the fix. As another person said, it's still not as fast as it was but it's better than the molasses I was experiencing. So, for what its' worth, how does Idea run under Mustang? Any known problems?
JDK 1.5.0_8 is out and supposed to fix the problem. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html#150_08 (BugId 640 1245).

For what it's worth, I tried JDK 1.5.0_08 just now using the Beta of IntelliJ 6, on Fedora Core 5 using kernel 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp. It is still really, really slow.
Also something to note is that Eclipse 3.2 running on the same JDK, same system, etc and Eclipse is very very fast.
