Structure Pane Gone During Indexing

Why is it that Maia dismisses the structure pane when it performs
background indexing? I start IDEA. The structure pane is open and
empty, with the legend "Initializing...." The background index update
starts, and the structure pane goes away. I have to re-open it
manually--every time I launch IDEA.

I assume the structure pane can't be functional until the indexes
are up to date. But I'd really like it to stay open, perhaps with a
legend like "Indexing..." until indexing is complete and it can be
populated.

This is true - at least on my installtion - for the project view also.

Furthermore - when doing and ANT build the Messages pane and the A

NT Build pane also close. This behaviour is sporadic in so far as sometimes they stay open, mostly the don't.
