IC 90.116 on Fedora = not launching

I have downloaded IC 90.116 and installed it onto my fedora machine.  When I try to launch it however, I get an error in a message dialog stating:

Fatal error initializing class com.intellij.openapi.fileTypes.FileTypeManager: java.lang.NullPointerException
Complete error stacktrace was written to idea.log

I hit OK and the splash screen just stays there and the underlying process remains until i  locate its PID and manually kill it.  Also there is no idea.log anywhere I would have thought.

Actually I  take that back.  It works when I launch it from a terminal.  However, I created a .desktop app launcher and when launching it from the menus it fails with above error.  The only conceivable difference I can think of is JDK.  The default JDK on my system is 1.5.  In the past (up through 8.1) I set the env var IDEA_JDK to my 1.6 install.  That works for my 8.1 menu launcher.  Does Maia not recognize IDEA_JDK?

I found idea.log, albeit in a very unexpected location.  It seems Maia IC writes all this stuff that used to go in user home (~) into its install directory instead.  Is this expected?  As is generally considered good practice on *nix systems I installed this as root, so these install dirs are owned by the root user.  I have to assume this is the underlying issue now that I see it is trying to write to these directories instead of the user dir.

Anyway, the log clearly shows that it is using jdk 1.6 so it must be recognizing IDEA_JDK.
