Store current layout as default missing?

I just downloaded the latest version of Maia (#10781).

Under 8 I could click on "Store current layout as default" to save my layout but that doesn't seem to be available in 9. Am I missing something or is it a bug?

Thanks, Paul.

This feature has been removed.

Thanks for the response.

Is it going to be replaced by different functionality?

Thanks, Paul.

Why did you use the explicit save/restore layout actions? Why isn't the default
behavior good enough?

Hi Dmitry.

Basically, sometimes when I'm working (and that involves anything from debugging, navigating etc.) I can have different windows open in my editor. Once I've finished doing a particular task though, I always want to go back to my default coding setup. This is the project view on the left, the structure view on the right and the editor in the middle. No other windows/things should be open. Once I'd stored this layout, I just hit ctrl-F12 and it was there for me.

On the new idea, the closest thing I can see is ctrl shift F12 to hide all windows and then I need to click in the project and structure tab to get them back.

Thanks, Paul.

In IDEA 8.x I had a customised "default" layout set up, which was applicable to all new projects. Very handy.
In IDEA 9 all new projects are created with predefined standard layout. As a result, every time I create a new project, I have to rearrange tool windows to my taste again. Loss of productivity.
To be honest, it was quite annoying to find out that the feature was surreptitiously removed without asking us users. If you don't want it in the core IDE, can you please make it available as a plugin?

I agree. I also had a customized "default" layout of my tool windows into locations where I like them. That way when I created a new project, the layout matched. For example, prefer the commander tool on the left rather than the right.

Another reason this feature is helpful is that as you add plugins, the tool window strips can get overcrowded to the point where you cannot see the ones on the far right when working on a small monitor. So I keep my most critical ones (and ones with out accelerator mnemonics) over on the left.

I am disappointed to see this feature removed and hope it is brought back.

Wow... I am also shocked to see this gone... I will often open other windows, resize or move them as necessary to my current task, and then
I want to restore to the default layout (which I've customized).

Please tell me that I'm wrong in thinking that the ability to quickly return to the default layout is gone.

As another poster said, please either return this functionality in the core product or provide it as a plug-in.

Not having this functionality, for me, removes a good amount of pleasure from the product :-(

Hello Jay,

It's too late to be shocked - the feature has been restored already. :)

Just discovered Tasks contexts and it would be good to save not only files but layouts as well in them. It may add "Perspectives" to IDEA
