Is it possible to configure the Applet Viewer in 8.1 to connect to the server via a Proxy?

I'm trying to debug a problem in the communication between the client and server sides of the
project I work on.

I have a 3rd party tool which will monitor the http traffic allowing me to see all requests and responses, the contents of their headers etc.

This works fine when running the server in Tomcat and the applet in IE, but I'd like to monitor the effects of changes to my code within my development environment. I have a client/server setup within Intellij IDEA but although I have put the proxy settings in the VM params for the applet (and can see the changes made in the console logging of the applet - see below) the 3rd party tool sees no traffic.

Console logging (editted for clarity):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_18\bin\java" -agentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,address=127.0.0.1:65503,suspend=y,server=n "-Djava.security.policy=C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\IntelliJ IDEA 8.1.4\bin\appletviewer.policy" -DproxySet=true -Dhttp.proxyHost=127.0.0.1 -Dhttp.proxyPort=8888 -Dfile.encoding=windows-1252 -classpath <VERY LONG CLASSPATH>
Connected to the target VM, address: '127.0.0.1:65503', transport: 'socket'
