Linux Installer

On the download page there is Windows installer, Mac Installer but no Linux Installer.
Any reason for that?

Although I can unpack the tarball fine and create any links I want, it is much more of a friendly experience if I can just run a script (like the netbeans install) that unpacks IDEA where I want and adds links in the (Gnome) menu.

I don't agree with you. I always prefer to unpack and launch over unpack and
install.

What are you disagreeing with?
That an installer is a more friendly experience than having to type several commands to unpack the tarball and integrate it with your system?

Regardless of any philosophical differences, I'm not suggesting that we replace the tarball with an installer script.
I'm suggesting that we include an installer script as well as the tarball on the download page.
