How to really kill the "Make" or "Stopping - Make" processes?

This has beein happening intermittently since I first started tinkering with IntelliJ CE
a couple of months ago. I start up the IDE and it does a gradle sync then tries "make"ing the project. Except it doesnt. It sits there whirring away and making zero progress. If I try to "stop" it it then sits there forever "stopping".

Is there any recommended way to stop this? At the very least to stop it building when I start the IDE.

I would recommend opening a bug report (http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/IDEA) as that is clearly undesired behavior.
