Have you com.sun.facelets.FaceletViewHandler in your classpath? Also, you can go to Project Structure -> Facets - > JSF -> Defaults and check if Facelets are correctly detected.

Ah got it thanks, the viewhandler was in the cp but the view is another module it needed to be attached to.
