Problem downloading 13.1.1 - just how big is it ?

I've been taking EAP patches for a few months but saw a full 13.1.1 was available so I've just tried to download it. In fact there was no problem downloading it but I thought that perhaps I should abandon it when it reached 466Mbytes !

Previous 13s have been 250ish Mbytes so I do suspect something is amiss.

Any thoughts or should I just try again ?

I'm using linux and issued: wget http://download-cf.jetbrains.com/idea/ideaIU-13.1.1.tar.gz, which is what I normally do for a full download.

run at about 23:30 GMT 30/3/14.

I've just downloaded it again and it did stop at 609,239,040 Bytes

But linux archive manager claims it's not a valid gzip.

Hi Graham,

Just tried - downloads ok for me. It displayed 278124714/278124714 (266M) on my Ubuntu box. Try also using different mirrors https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/entries/23371131 .

The third time wan't lucky - I stopped it after 280,133,632 bytes. Perhaps I will try a mirror but it seems ludicrous for this to be happening in the first place.

That's over 1.2Gbytes of my 3G monthly quota wasted in downloaded rubbish....

And I do pay for IDEA.

In the olden days most people did not have modems. We had computer
clubs. Some people would download stuff for others and bring multiple
copies of it on floppy to the monthly meeting.

Perhaps you can find someone with an unlimited high speed channel to
burn it on DVD for you.

And I terminated my latest download attempt, this evening at about 21.30GMT, after 283,895,220 bytes. This was with download-eu.jetbrains.com.

This is not the first time I have reported problems: http://devnet.jetbrains.com/thread/289735?tstart=0 in 2010; http://devnet.jetbrains.com/thread/449264?tstart=0 in 2013. As as I mention there I seldom got the first download to work, although I suspect it must have happened once at least. However in the past the download has always been about the correct size and not as I report here over 600,000 bytes for a 278,000 file.

But other downloads, while seldom as large as IDEA inevitably work first time. In particular Grails (now about 150M), they have quite an active build sequence and I have downloaded almost every versions since 2.0 and I do not recall ever having the sort of problem I have with IDEA, there may have been the odd failure but I cannot honestly recall one in the past two or three years.

I will be raising the issue with my ISP, but I'm sure they will ask about other downloads and I will have to say that it does appear to be only with JetBrains servers. One does not mind the odd failure but in the case of IDEA my success rate must be less than 25% and falling.

Of course I could stay on the EAP, and those patch downloads do work correctly, or at least none has claimed to have an error and the resulting program has appeared to work. But at some stage patches won't be available I imagine and I will have to download a full version...

I really would appreciate some response from JetBrains - in particular how a server can serve such wildly expanded files ?

Hi Graham,

The "download-cf.jetbrains.com" download site that you used is actually Amazon CloudFront distribution.

At the moment we are delivering our downloads using "Use All Edge Locations" method of CloudFront.
Basically this means that we are using all possible locations all around the globe that Amazon provides.

Another mirror, "download-ln.jetbrains.com" belongs to LimeLight networks, which is another world's best CDN.

Try to contact your local ISP regarding the matter, may be you will not face the same issue if you connect using wired network.

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Sergey

Thanks - I did also use download-eu, is that Amazon as well ?

But to repeat it really does only seem to be your downloads that have problems - as it happened I downloaded 200Mbyte of NetBeans on Saturday afternoon without a problem, well, actually it did stop, I resumed it and it finished, MD5 was correct and it started without a problem.

I genuinely have never had any consistent problems downloading except with IDEA - you can see from the other postings that this is not new and the problems went on, unreported in the main because they worked second or third time, in between the postings. But the small EAP update patches are fine.

I will definitely bring this up with our ISP but I suspect I know what they will say...

Hi Roedy,

thanks for your kind offer - but for the moment I'll persist with trying to sort out the issue. It is the 21st. century after all - or so I am told...

Hi again,

> Thanks - I did also use download-eu, is that Amazon as well ?

You can easily check it using "ping download-cf.jetbrains.com" or "host download-cf.jetbrains.com" (depending of the platform). Just check what reverse DNS lookup shows you.

(Please note that you will most probably get different IP addresses, it depends of your location)

$ host download-cf.jetbrains.com
download-cf.jetbrains.com is an alias for d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net.
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.5.43
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.5.48
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.5.132
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.6.218
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.7.119
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.7.205
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.7.217
d1opms6zj7jotq.cloudfront.net has address 54.230.4.221

$ host download-ln.jetbrains.com
download-ln.jetbrains.com is an alias for jetbrains.vo.llnwd.net.
jetbrains.vo.llnwd.net has address 68.142.79.70
jetbrains.vo.llnwd.net has address 68.142.79.69

JetBrains fully relies on CDN providers (like Amazon CloudFront and Limelight networks as for now).
Sometimes we switch between them, setting one of them as a primary CDN.
We don't setup distibution servers of our CDN providers, we use it as a service.

So some time ago you could use different CDN provider compared to what you used recently.

So I'd ask you to contact your ISP to discuss further.

Sergey
