Will IDEA not work on a Debian based system?

I've been using IDEA successfully on Debian for around 6 years.

I think the reason it didn't work on my system was that I was using the 1.5 JDK.
It runs now, which is good so the question remains, why is only RHL specified on the Download page?

However, saying all this, when I close IDEA I get the following message on the command line:

Warning: The encoding 'UTF-8' is not supported by the Java runtime.

And also some of the dialogs appear without content
e.g. Add JDK in the Project Settings
and Download and Install Plugin.

This is Idea 7941 on Linux Mint 5 (Ubuntu 8.04 base) with JDK1.6_0_7

Hello opticyclic,

There are so many varieties of desktop environment/window manager/JDK/etc
varieties of Linux that we can't really promise that IDEA will work in your
specific configuration. It might not run, or it might exhibit some problems
such as some dialogs not getting painted properly (which is what you see),
and there's often exactly nothing we're able to do to help you.

On the other hand, if you run IDEA on Windows or Mac (with JDK 1.5) and it
doesn't work, it's definitely our fault and not yours or your OS vendor's.

Fair enough.
Do you test on Red Hat as well as Windows/Mac then?

I still think you could put RHL/Debian on the Linux page though :)

In case anyone else has the repainting issue, it was due to a conflict with Compiz and is fixed by putting the following in your bash profile (~.bashrc)
#Workaround re-paint issues with Java and Compiz
export AWT_TOOLKIT="MToolkit"
