Ubuntu: IDEA12 vs. IDEA 13, same default font different look?

Hi,

when I installed IDEA 13, I saw that the font for the IDE (not the editor) looks bigger and bolder. It's really a waste of space this way. I thought the default font might have changed, but indeed it is the same "Ubuntu" font at size 15 which is used. Does someone know what happened here?

My system is Ubuntu 12.04 precise, 64bit with GNOME, Oracle JRE 1.7.0_17

Update: As played around, I that it is indeet the Ubuntu font which is used, but it is set in bold instead of plain. Therefore, "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Bold" look similar in IDEA 13 (and of course only there).

Here is a screenshot for IDEA 12

And here is one of the same window with IDEA 13

I have this same issue. Also when switching to IntelliJ theme, the fonts return to normal.

Any clues?

Most likely two problems here.
(1) Fonts being bold: please check if recommendations in IDEA-92635 help.
(2) Different font in IDEA 13: vote/watch IDEA-117495.

Hi Roman,

I filed a new issue on youtrack some time ago. Please see http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-119159

In the comments you can read all the things we tried so far, including switching to a new java version and checking whether the correct fonts are used in the settings.
The very strange thing is: When I debug my plugin with IDEA and the "sandbox IDEA" opens up, the correct fonts are used there.

I'm not sure who introduces this bug, but I haven't changed my operating system when I switched from IDEA 12 to 13.

Nevertheless, thank you for looking into this.

Patrick, there are two separate problems.

The first one is that in IDEA 13 Darcula actually does not use a system font (IDEA-117495). That's clearly a bug in IDEA and should be fixed - that's why I've asked to vote the issue. As a workaround you may activate "Settings | Appearance | Override default fonts" option and choose desired font below.

The second problem is that another font being rendered bold. This looks like IDEA-92635 and we can't fix it on our side. The solution is presented in the issue - have you tried it?

I have already voted for the issue. When I override the default font and choose the normal Ubuntu, then the font is still displayed in bold. Currently, I'm in the office but when I'm at home, I will try to remove the package fonts-unfonts-core. However, it doesn't make sense to me, why IDEA 13 as sandbox works perfectly fine, while the main IDEA 13 displays the font in bold. Aren't they using the exact same IDEA version?

There may be other differences. E.g. do they use the same JDK?

Exactly this was the hint I needed. Of course they don't, because my Mathematica Plugin is developed with Java 1.6. After switching the JDK of IDEA to 1.6, the fonts are not bold anymore. Therefore, the issue seems to be a combination of the upgrade of Java from 1.6->1.7 and IDEA 12->13.
Although I upgraded my Java from 1.7.0_17 to 1.7.0_51, I did not think about downgrading to 1.6.

Thank you very much for your help!

Cheers
Patrick
