Administrator Priviledges required on my machine for Selena, not for 6.0

Hi.

It's been a while now that my Selena on Vista cannot run without administrative priviledges (UAC is turned on).

I have to explicitly run it as administrator, otherwise I see the splash screen for a split second and then it disappears. No logs are produced in this case.

If I run it as administrator it works fine, but it's annoying to need to do it.

IntelliJ 6, on the same machine, runs without any problems without administrative priviledges.

Could anyone instruct me how to proceed with this? I can imagine this is something specific to my machine, but since IntelliJ 6 works fine, I am asking JetBrains help here.

Thanks in advance,
Amnon

In which directory have you installed IntelliJ IDEA? What VCS plugins are
you using?

i can only testify that i run it nicely without being admin.

Maybe you installed it as admin ?

When I run the installation (of 6.x or Selena) it needs to run as administrator.

I tried installing for the current user or for all users to no avail (6.x works fine either way).

I installed it in the default directory (latest build is in "C:\Program Files\JetBrains\IntelliJ IDEA 7312").

I am using the Perforce VCS plug-in.

Hello Amnon,

Just tried to install latest build as a regular user (into a directory under
the user's profile, not into Program Files). IDEA installed and ran just
fine.

Hello Amnon,

I am using the Perforce VCS plug-in.

Do you have "Dump Perforce commands to..." enabled in the Perforce settings?

No, it is turned off.

yes,i do this for every IDEA version for several years now, never had a problem.

My best guess is your non-admin user has no write access to where you install it (c:\program files ....) , did you check ?

Did you try installing in a directory that belong to you (your user home for example, or even the temp dir, you can always uninstall it afterwards)

That's true (nothing I changed, default in Vista). But why would 6.0 work and not Selena? Shouldn't 6.0 suffer from the same exact thing (which it doesn't on my machine) if that were the issue? I have 6.0 and Selena side by side in my "C:\Program Files" directory - 6.0 is fine, Selena is not.

I am happy to see the release candidates, but this problem is still there.

IJ6 installs into the default directory and runs fine without administrative privileges.
IJ7 under the same exact conditions cannot run on my machine without administrative privileges.

What changed that causes this? A well behaving Vista application should not need to be installed in a user directory or require administrative privileges (examples - Office, Adobe Photoshop, VMWare, Visual Studio).

JetBrains people - you are more relevant here than other users asking me to install in a directory other than my normal Program Files directory.

Thanks,
Amnon

I have no idea what was done to resolve this, but it is OK in the released Selena, even though not in any of the EAP builds.

Could it be simply the directory name, or did you turn something off for the release that made it work?

Thanks,
Amnon
