Importing Flash CS6 project

Hi,

I am beginning to use IntelliJ IDEA 12 and wondered if it is possible to import a FLA based Flash project (created in Flash CS6), so I can begin to edit it in IntelliJ and compile it using the Flex 4.6 SDK? (For a Flash project based only on an AS file, I found a video which I successfully used to import a more basic AS file based project: http://www.wastedpotential.com/using-intellij-idea-for-actionscript-development/ But I have a complex project as described next.)

My more complex project's AS3 is in a few frames, but not an AS file (no Main.AS). The project also has many movieclip objects (images converted to movieclips) in its library and moved on stage, plus a com folder with 3 transform manager AS files. A "messy" project.

Maybe much work would be involved to convert it, re-write scripts, change to AS based, etc., but I would try if I knew what I need to convert, what specific steps to take, what is needed to bring it fully into IntelliJ.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions, leads, tutorials, videos, etc to get started.

Thank you for your help.

Best Wishes,

Hi,
IntelliJ IDEA is good for writing code. It doesn't support visual designer or timeline. And it is not able to impoort FLA files. So you probably need to export an SWC file in Flash CS6. SWC is a library format - it contains compiled AS code and assets. In IntelliJ IDEA you'll create a new project, configure dependency on this SWC library and use classes and assets from your SWC.

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I am a beginner using IntelliJ IDEA, so not sure how to choose the correct newproject type in IntelliJ and configure dependency on this SWC library or use classes and assets
from the SWC. If I could figure out one simple project, import it into IntelliJ using a SWC, then I would have a model on which to build. Is there a step-by-step guide, tutorial, video that could get me started?

Even a basic set of specific steps:

new project> select______> next step...etc.

(Of course a simple sample file showing an example of the settings, configuration, set-up of SWC, etc. included would be a bigger help.)

Thank you for your help. (I am enjoying learning how to use IntelliJ IDEA. Fantastic software!)

Best Wishes,

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Flash CS and FLA files. I suggested to export SWC because I heard that some people work with Flash CS + IntelliJ IDEA in this way.

As a start you can look through embedded documentation (also available online): Language and Framework-Specific Guidelines | ActionScript and Flex.
You may look through some related samples: here and here. A lot of 3rd party samples in the internet, and you have already found one.

I think it is possible to start even without reading any tutorials. Workflow with creating a new ActionScript project is rather simple and it is shown in the video that you referred. Dependencies are configured at Project Structure | Modules | [your module] | [your build configuration subnode] | Dependencies atb. Click [+], then select 'Add dependency on new library, then select required SWC file.

Hi Alexander,

Thank you again for these suggestions. I will try. I can create a simple project in Flash Pro CS6, export a SWC, open a new ActionScript project in IntelliJ, and see if I can configure correctly to use the SWC's script and assets in the IntelliJ project. Then, once included OK, I could edit in IntelliJ and compile (using Flex SDK/AIR SDK) using IntelliJ. That is my goal. If I can get one simple ActionScript/SWC project to work in IntelliJ, then I can build on this model and eventually include a more complex Flash project and its SWC.

Kind Regards,
