Hello HamsterofDeath,

is ij7 going to be released soon?

Yes.

i thought we'll get it around the beginning of 2008?

The release date was announced as "before the end of 2007". October matches
that too. :)

Cool! Will there be a possibility after the release to upgrade a personal license for 5.x ?

Yes, you will be able to upgrade your personal license with the usual 40%
discount (i.e. for $149).

Is the discount the same regardless of how long ago one purchased their license?

Hello Randall,

their license?

Yes. You qualify for a free upgrade if you purchased IDEA 6.0 after August
13, 2007 (if I remember the date correctly). Otherwise, you can upgrade any
license for any older version with the same discount.

So you could actually upgrade to 6.0 now, and then get 7.0 for free one it is released, if I interpret things correctly.

That's not very finely graded. Someone running under a several-year-old license gets the same discount that I, who've used IDEA for less than a year, get?

Well, yes, but that someone was using an older version for that year, and
thus having less pleasure than you, who were using the latest and greatest
production release. :)

I'm not aware of many products that have a graded upgrade pricing policy.

if i were god, i'd force everyone to pay exactly the amount of money he thinks idea is worth.

Sadly, I doubt I would be able to afford it then.

yes, but what would be the point ? :) he can just use the EAP till release and then upgrade too, to the same effect I believe ?

Anyway just a matter of preference

IDEA is worth its weight in gold. Sadly, I'm not quite sure how you
weigh the physical weight of it...

Do I take the weight of my hard drive and divide it my the percentage of
size IDEA takes from its capacity?

obviously idea's value is measured in time and pleasure.
the formula for the time based value is "time needed if eclipse used/time actually needed because idea was used". this should give you a value about 2.5, which means if you needed a month, idea saved you 1.5.
now, there's the pleasure factor. this is a highly subjective matter. in my case, the pleasure factor is a constant value of 1.5 which is muliplied by the time factor because
a) being faster is fun
b) idea doing the troublesome stuff keeps my pleasure level high

now you take add values and divide them by 2 -> in my case, i get 2.5+3.75=6.25. this number is called the "personal idea factor".
6.25 is great :D
the convert that to money, you use the following formula:
money m = (1-1/personal idea factor)*your salary for the whole time you would have needed using eclipse;

you'll see that this formula gives you negative values for using eclipse. which means: don't. ;)
