"Toggle Bookmark" shifts a "Breakpoint" icon - breaks their vertical align

7330, Vista

See the image attached - having both a bookmark and a breakpoint on the same line vs having only a breakpoint. In the second case the breakpoint icon shifts due to not having the bookmark one and in the end both breakpoint icons are not aligned vertically, as I suppose they probably should be.

Same for vise versa situation: one line with a "Bookmark" icon only vs another line with a "Bookmark" and a "Breakpoint" icons - "Bookmark" icons are not aligned vertically.

I would really like to see the left-hand gutter have a fixed width. As it stands, it expands and contracts depending on the complement of icons that are displayed there for any given file at any given time.

Along vaguely similar lines, I noticed that between the initial introduction of the new Find tab and the current form that its display was refined to prevent the content of the window from shifting down and up as the find bar appeared and disappeared.

So how would you solve the problem of displaying multiple icons, then? Just
as an example, you can have an editor bookmark, a field watchpoint and an
UI Designer component binding on a single field. And that's probably not
the limit.

Fix the width of the gutter and craft some creative iconography for "overloaded" marks.

Hello Randall,

"overloaded" marks.

You need quite a lot of creativity to implement a solution for programmatically
combining an arbitrary number of unknown icons. Note that gutter icons can
be provided by third-party plugins or (for example, in the case of UI Designer)
selected by the user.

You folks seem pretty creative so far...

Ah.

But at least for the complement of icons that could occur concurrently during editing alone and using only JetBrains-supplied marks, could it not be done? At a minimum, I think the combination of implementing or overriding + having implementations or overrides should be fit into a single column.

This could be done in theory, but this will likely make navigation to base
class or derived classes more difficult (you'll have a smaller target to
hit), and won't solve the problem reported by the original poster.

We have discussed this here before, haven't we? (It may have been a couple of years back, though)

I remember somebody making a suggestion back then to only display at most one icon in the gutter and provide something like the intention lightbulb for accessing the rest (maybe there was even a mockup screenshot and/or a reference to some other product doing something along these lines - I will try and do some digging in the forum archive).

Regards,
Jens

Okay, I found the thread (a little over four years old). The "other product" I
recalled is named Netbeans, but unfortunately the links in message
http://www.intellij.net/forums/click.jspa?messageID=506074
are no longer valid...

Anyway, it seems not much has changed in the gutter during those last years ;)

Best regards,
Jens

-1 I don't think it's worth spending time on.
I have to say I'm reasonable comfortable with the way the gutter icons work - considering the constraints. The odd misalignment or change in gutter width is pretty minor compared to some of the usability issues under discussion elsewhere (e.g. find bar, breadcrumbs, etc). It's nice to be elegant and pretty when you can, but I prefer to see all the icons in the gutter without having to mouse over some to see whether one I'm looking for is hidden there...

No, thanks!! :) Eclipse works that way You can't find your breakpoints
if there are line bookmarks and vice versa. Terrible!
IDEA, keep it current way! All icons visible together! Better alignment,
if possible, is good to have, but not the most important.
