How do I remove tool windows?

Is it possible to remove a tool window button from the side panel? I can't
find a way. The latest build puts a Maven button there that I don't need.

Many people asked for this for ages (in respect with Commander which I
believe not very many use actively) and Jet brain never responded. Now with
Maven I really am running out of space on side bar :(

Workaround: to remove the Maven button just uninstall the Maven plugin which is bundled with IntelliJ IDEA.

There is a "Plugin enable/disable" feature on the Selena roadmap. I think it should be given a high priority now, as the number of bundled plugins has grown significantly. For example, in build 6981, I've got 42 plugins installed, of which only 4 were downloaded separately. I am only using 12 plugins out of 42. Even if I uninstall the remaining 30, I'll get them with the next EAP. There must be a way to disable some of the plugins without actually removing them.

Removing bundled plugins is also not an option, if the IDEA installation is shared by several people.

Another thought: plugin enabling/disabling should probably be configured on a per-project basis. I may use Maven in some projects and not use it in other projects. Whenever I don't use it, I do not want Maven-specific features hanging around.

Nice idea, but I guess such a change might be much more complex than a
global enable/disable switch, given that plugins are initialized when
IDEA starts rather than when a certain project is loaded?
