Modal Windows

Is this just on OS X or also on Widnows? When I open the Local History of a file, the window is modal and I cannot switch back to the project to look at some other files while I am browsing through the history.

I'm using the Alloy theme on OS X .. is this supposed to work like this? If so then I'll file a bug for it. These modal windows are extremely counter productive.

Same on Win 2000 / Alloy

Perhaps it's modal for a reason..

I can imagine that having multiple (potentially 'overlapping') local history
views open might create confusing situations.
However, I'd vote for non-modality myself as well..

Hi Stefan,

I wholeheartly agree on this: models are designed to annoy the copy and paste users. I just love it when you have to close a bunch of windows just to see some text which was being overlapped by some other window and to reopen all your previous windows again... so nice!! (NOT!)

It also means you don't have maximise and resize buttons which is a real frustration for me especially when it comes to version control merging and comparing! Very frustrating to have to drag the window out wide just to see as much of the text as possible!

Hello Stefan,

Not necessarily, there are other means for that :)

Modal dialogs are much easier to code (knowing that nothing changes while
the dialog is open). Of course, this is not justification, only an explanation.

There is no generic solution for that: every such dialog will have to be
redesigned, all kinds of listeners added etc. I do not think this is doable
in reasonable time.

So let's discuss which modal dialogs are the most annoying: hopefully we
will be able to address some of them in Selena.

Hi Vladislav,

For me the most annoying ones are for example the dialogs to edit templates. I wrote a story about that a while ago:

Maybe the template editors are a good bunch to start with?
