Open individual files without a project?

Sometimes I want to open a file (say, SQL file or whatever), that is not associated with any particular project.  But when I try, Jetbrains refuses to open the file and says I need to have a project open first.  I suppose I could just open any old existing project first, and then open the file I want, but I consider that an irritating and unnecessary step.

Is there some way to configure IntelliJ to not demand a project?

No there is no way to do such. IntelliJ IDEA is an IDE and not a file editor. As such, it needs the configuration that a project provides, For example, with the SQL file you mention, what SQL dialect should be used when highlighting and offering code completion options? What datasource should be used so IDEA can offer table and column name completion?
